The Animated STAR TREK Series
Will Be Released on DVD in 2006!

Paramount has officially confirmed that Star Trek: The Animated Series will be released on DVD in 2006.

The Digital Bits confirmed with "multiple sources" as well as the studio that work was in progress for a mid-to-late 2006 release of the complete animated series. "One source told us not to expect the title on the studio's release schedule before June, and a couple of others have let us know that September or October is tentatively planned," noted the site.

The animated Star Trek debuted on television on September 8th, 1973, the seventh anniversary of the original series' release on September 8th, 1966. The Digital Bits predicted that the animated series DVDs might be released to coincide with Star Trek's 40th anniversary in September 2006.

Twenty-two original stories were produced for the animated series over two seasons, with most of the original series cast returning to voice their characters. There has been no word yet on how many discs might comprise the DVD set(s).

Be sure to visit Kail Tescar's excellent
STAR TREK: The Animated Series web site.

This site was listed in Jeff Greenwald book Future Perfect: How Star Trek Conquered Planet Earth. The book is a fascinating journey into STAR TREK's effects across the globe. Many books about STAR TREK have been written that cover the STAR TREK movies and series and how they are made, but Jeff's book covers the oft forgotten fan base that exists throughout the world. Many card-carrying fans themselves would say that they are responsible for the franchise's success, but that is not the case. They are important to be sure and they are represented well in Jeff's book, but much greater in number are the many thousands of people in the world that each like and appreciate and cherish different parts of STAR TREK, but who do not consider themselves STAR TREK fans of the traditional mold. Jeff's book is about those people as well. People from all walks of life and from very different socio-economic strata are interviewed in the book, giving the reader a better idea of how Gene Roddenberry's creation has influenced human society in the 20th century than if he had limited his interviews to only die-hard convention goers.
I whole heartedly recommend Jeff Greenwald's book. It can most easily be purchased online via amazon.com.

There was an excellent article on the Animated STAR TREK series in the October/November issue of STAR TREK Communicator magazine. The article's writer, Kevin Dilmore, used this site as a reference, and he also interviewed my friend, and STAR TREK script writer,
Fred Bronson.
